A fresh start begins at the door
Happy Year of the Fire Horse! ✨🌕 Whether you celebrate the Lunar New Year or not, there’s no denying the feeling that spring is around the corner. With the shift in seasons comes ample opportunity to harness the energy of change in life and at home. For this reason, I wanted to focus on what is arguably the most important part of any home – the entryway.
In Feng Shui, the entryway is considered the most important part of the home because it is the "mouth of chi,” acting as the primary portal where energy, opportunities, and prosperity enter the living space. Practically speaking, it’s the point of transition from outside to inside and it can have a huge impact on how we feel in our homes.
As a professional home organizer, I’ve seen just about every entryway there is and wanted to share a few quick fixes you could make that would have significant impact:
Designate a spot for shoes 👟
It doesn’t matter how many shoes are at the entryway – what matters most is that there is a designated place to put them. This could be a floor mat, shoe rack, a cabinet, or cubby.
Create a drop zone 🔑
This could be a dish or tray used to keep your keys, phone, wallet, or other small accessories. The key is to make it frictionless and effortless – stay away from drawers or decorative boxes that add extra steps.
Hooks! 👜
Even if you have a closet at the entryway, there is always a reason to have hooks available on the wall or door. These are great for hanging bags, scarves, hats, coats – you name it. The goal is for nothing to end up on the floor. My favorite piece of furniture to recommend to clients is a hall tree. They come in all shapes and sizes and can cover most of your entryway needs.
A few other quick tips:
Clean your front door with a wet cloth or wipe (front and back!)
Sweep, mop, and/or vacuum the floor
Make sure the door can open fully and that there’s nothing blocking it or in the way
Ensure there’s adequate light upon entry – fix any broken bulbs, or add a lamp if needed
Small shifts at the door truly set the tone for everything that happens inside. As we welcome the Lunar New Year and the transition into spring, it’s the perfect time to reset what greets you each day. If your entryway feels overwhelming, it may signal something deeper in the home’s flow. Try a few of these suggestions — and if you’d like support creating systems that truly stick, I’d love to help.
